Chapter 14

After an entire day of going over scripts and practicing for their next live show, Jocelyn’s brain was pure fuzz. She hardly talked at dinner, although that didn’t keep her from noticing the way Kyle was staring at her from across the table. The intern, as nice as he was, had been a bit of a nuisance all day. In a nice way, of course—bringing her water, fluffing the pillow at her back, making sure the room was an acceptable temperature—but also uncomfortable.

Ben eventually took her to a room where they could lock the door.

Speaking of nuisances, what was with Ben and Theo? They seemed to be engaged in some sort of contest. Even at dinner. Making subtle digs at each other all evening. With Ben on one side of her and Theo on the other, she’d felt like the epitome of the rock and hard place idiom. So she’d gone to her room as soon as she’d finished eating, with plans to go to bed early.

Except she was bored.

Lying on her bed, she stared up at the wood ceiling with its beautiful white crown molding. People didn’t make houses the way they used to. But it was only seven, and she’d lain here for an hour.

Jocelyn blew out a breath.

She could watch a movie, but after talking about them and watching clips nonstop to get ready for the next show, for once she wasn’t in the mood. She could take a long bath and relax. But she always seemed to find the idea of a bubble bath more appealing than the actual act. Usually she got bored and came out feeling lethargic and even sweaty.

So...

She sat up. The stores behind the house didn’t close tonight until ten. Maybe a little brisk winter air and holiday shopping would do the trick.

By herself. No one watching her every move and expression. Even better.

In less than ten minutes she was bundled up in Ilse’s designer jeans, a lovely deep-purple sweater, and leather boots, all covered by the thick jacket Theo had brought her to use. Shabby by comparison, but who cared. She added a hat that probably wouldn’t do much to keep her warm but was better than nothing, and made her way to the shops.

She decided to start at the far end and make her way back.

The store at the corner was called Trendz. A boutique, it carried the most adorable home goods, furniture, décor, clothing, and more. She was just picking up a leather handbag that she thought might make a good gift for Ilse when someone brushed against her. Absorbed in checking out the details of the lime-green bag decorated with silver studs, she murmured, “Excuse me,” and stepped to the side.

Except the person stepped closer, and then a low voice said near her ear, “That’s cute but I don’t think it’s your style.”

On a gasp she jerked her gaze up to find Ben standing beside her, green eyes mildly amused.

A line from the movie Casablanca popped into her head and she mentally adjusted it for the setting.
